Del Sol Ragnar Relay

February 24-25, 2012

Start spring a little early this year, and join us for an adventure running past red rock cliffs and through the stunning Arizona desert. The fun starts in the wide open spaces of Wickenburg, AZ, and ends in beautiful Tempe. We’ll pack 2 vans full of fun-loving runners of ALL ability levels to make our way 200 miles relay-style across the Sonoran desert and around metropolitan Phoenix.

We’ve taken care of everything!
Your registration fee for our team covers: your share of the entry fee into the relay, van rental, gas, required safety gear (vests, headlamps, butt lights, etc), required volunteers for the course, and custom shirts showing our team spirit. We’ll get you to the right places at the right time, find nearby restaurants, and make sure everyone is playing by the same rules. Basically, all you have to do is pack your running clothes and enjoy! You can also choose to stay with the team in a hotel in Phoenix Thursday night before the race, or in Tempe Saturday night following the race. We’ll definitely be holding a team celebration at the end of the relay!

This team is full and we are no longer recruiting for the 2012 Del Sol Ragnar Relay. Join us for one of our other events this year. Stay tuned. Our team bios are coming soon!

Got questions? We’ve got answers!

When and where is the relay?

Friday, February 24th, 2012 – Saturday February 25th, 2012.
Start Line: Sunset Park – Wickenburg, AZ
Finish Line:
Tempe Arts Center – Tempe, AZ

The team will stay overnight in Phoenix, AZ, on Thursday, February 23rd, then drive approximately 1.5 hours to the start in Wickenburg Friday morning. The team will stay overnight in Tempe on Saturday, February 25th to celebrate our accomplishment.

What am I paying for?

  • Entry Fee – There is a single entry fee for the team which is divided among the 12 runners on the team
  • Van Rental – Rental of two 12-passenger vans (our mobile homes for the relay)
  • Gas – Sadly,12-passenger vans don’t get the best gas mileage!
  • Required Safety Equipment – We’ll provide the safety vests, headlamps and butt lights required by the Ragnar Relay Series for each team. You’re welcome to bring your own, but it won’t save you any money.
  • Volunteers – The Ragnar Relay Series requires that each team provide 3 volunteers for the course during the relay. In order to simplify things, we’re going to pay to have those volunteers recruited for us. The proceeds go to a local charity.
  • Shirts – We’ll have matching shirts for the whole team so we look and feel as awesome as we are!

What’s with the lodging?

We’d love to have the team together Thursday and Saturday night, but we understand that some of you might live in the area. In that case, you’d probably like to save some money by staying at home or with friends and family on one or more of those nights. That’s why the lodging is optional.

Currently, there is availability at the Phoenix Airport Springhill Suites (queen beds) on Thursday night and the Courtyard Downtown Tempe (queen beds) on Saturday night. We plan on staying at those hotels, assuming rooms are still available once the team is assembled. The optional lodging rates reflect the cost for a shared room, but everyone will have their own bed.

If you are traveling with a spouse, or someone else you don’t mind sharing a bed with, then only one of you needs to register for lodging. The other can register with the “no lodging” option. Just let us know who’s sharing beds when you reply to our confirmation email.

How will I meet up with the team?

Team vans will be departing the Phoenix airport for the Springhill Suites in Phoenix on Thursday evening and returning to the Phoenix airport Sunday morning. If you’re flying from out of town, we recommend you use the Phoenix airport. You can meet us at the airport and we’ll transport you to the hotel. Otherwise, we suggest you meet up with the team at the Springhill Suites Thursday evening or early Friday morning.

How fast of a runner do I need to be?

Our teams flawlessly mix runners who can maintain a 12-minute mile pace with those who are twice as fast – as well as all levels in between. Each runner typically sets his or her own goals for each leg of the relay, and the rest of us cheer them on. We’re far more interested in winning the awards for team spirit than we are in completing the relay in the shortest amount of time. We just hope everyone will give their best – whatever that is. We’re pretty laid back.

We are serious about getting from exchange to exchange in time to greet our runners, though. We don’t want somebody to kill a leg of the race only to be greeted by an empty exchange zone because they beat the van there. That sucks!

Ideally, you should at least be able to complete 5 miles in less than an hour. If you’re close but not quite there, don’t sweat it. Coach Brian will develop a custom plan that will have you ready in time for the relay. The Relay itself provides a wide variety of leg difficulties to suit novice and experienced runners alike.

What if I get injured and can’t participate?

Unfortunately, we cannot refund your registration in the event you are unable to participate in the relay. While this may seem a bit harsh, we need to pay to register the team, reserve vans and more long before the weekend of the relay. We may not be able to replace you.

What’s this whole thing going to be like?

If you’ve never experienced an overnight cross country relay, we suggest you read this overview of our experience at the Florida Keys Ragnar Relay written by Coach Brian.

Here’s what one Florida Keys Team Member had to say:

Daphne testimonial

Daphne M., FL

“Our team could not have done it without you. From the team coordination and scheduling to the driving, coaching, laughs & hugs… it was an experience of a lifetime and I am so thankful to have been on a team with you. Thanks for all the hard work you put into getting the team to the start line and back home. I know the hours it takes to pull off something like this… so thank you. I hope our paths cross soon and that there are more adventures together in the future! Thanks so much!” – Daphne, St. Petersburg, FL

And what one Tennessee Team Member said:

“Thanks for everything, Brian and Raffi! You guys did a great job. What an incredible adventure! Hope to see everyone at another Ragnar in the future!” – Jenna, Chicago, IL
