Introducing the RagStars!

On February 22, 2013, the RagStars hit the starting line of the Del Sol Ragnar Relay in Wickenburg, AZ. They traversed 200 miles through the desert before finally ending near the Arizona State University campus in Tempe!

The Ragstars

Here’s a brief introduction to the team:

Van #1

Runner #1 Maria aka “Falling Star” simply likes to run. Maria lives in St. Louis, MO, and is a busy Mom of two fantastic kids. She started running in 2008, in an effort to get active. To her great surprise she actually loved it! Physical benefits aside, she finds it a great stress reliever and thoroughly enjoys the camaraderie of the running community. In April of last year, Maria took a “run-cation” with a pal to Northern California for the Silverado half marathon. It was the most scenic path with a great finish party spot! Upon her return home, Maria began researching events in the Napa area looking for any excuse to head back. She stumbled across the Napa Valley Ragnar Relay. For a runner with a touch of insomnia, whose favorite distance is the half, in the ideal location… perfection! After trading a few emails with Brian of Digital Running – Bam – it was a done deal and Maria joined Team Uncorked! for the Napa Valley Ragnar Relay. Maria puts her law degree to work as the Director of Procurement and University Contracts at Webster University. She enjoys a good meal (hence the running), bad music (have you heard her running playlist?) and the company of great friends.

Maria is so excited to get started on her second Ragnar!

Runner #2 Cindy aka “Disco Star” – “I” after “C” except after “D” (in which case, it’s “Y”) Winston – as in the cigarette (though she would have NEVER inhaled even if she was a rebel) used to be a pediatric nurse. She spent hours on end on her feet, emptying urinals and colostomy bags, wiping butts and working the overnight graveyard shift. Then things like life, children, weight gain and Ragnar happened!

Cindy has always wanted to be a star. Secretly loving the limelight, she enjoys singing and dancing, but discovered she has 2 left feet and was not blessed with coordination or rhythm of any sort. The one thing she could do was run (this is where you insert the ‘Run Cindy, Run!’ clip of her running through childhood with her only friend, Jenny. Her ‘mama’ teaches her the ways of life and leaves her to choose her destiny). Yes, destiny. One foot in front of the other… So she ran in her spare time and in 2004, she ran her first and only Full Marathon. After giving birth to her son in 2005, she took a long hiatus from running until the year 2008. In December 2008, she gave birth to her second child and when her daughter was 8 months old, Cindy (not pregnant) was asked when her baby was due. Pudgy and out of shape, it was after that eye opening moment that she decided to lace up her running shoes again. Cindy began running about 5-6 Half Marathons a year. Two busy kids and full swing into motherhood, she abandoned her full time hospital nursing career with all it’s bodily fluids, not so sterile and oh-so-odoriferous white halls, and being on her feet into the wee hours of the night. In 2011, she was asked to fill in for an injured runner on a Ragnar team. Strangely, she was already comfortable with the bodily fluids, not so sterile but oh-so-odoriferous white van, and running on her feet into the wee hours of the night.

Although eager to do run another Del Sol Ragnar, Cindy lost her entire 2011 team – don’t ask, don’t smell. Abandoned by her former compatriots, destiny led her to team Captain, Brian and team Mom, Raffi who adopted her into the “Me So Thorny” family for the 2012 Del Sol Ragnar Relay. This was the height of her Star-dumb, and 5 minutes in the limelight, if you will. Never winning a contest in her life, Cindy gloriously delivered the Ragnar Relay Series Light the Night Contest to her team with a brilliant and sparkling nighttime run!

Cindy’s goals for this year include: (1) running another Ragnar (2) convincing her team that when she broke wind it was simply a passing Ragnarian on a windy day, NOT the funk emanating from the van (3) removing Miley Cyrus from her running playlist (4) maturing past the mind of a 12 year old boy, and (5) as a caffeine junkie, forgiving Brian and Raffi for making a Starbucks run in her own neighborhood while she was running her 3rd leg during 2012 Del Sol Ragnar.

Cindy’s very supportive husband brings home the bacon and watches over the youngsters as Cindy is always looking for a way to go gallivanting with the Digital Running Club on her next Ragnar adventure.Del Sol 2013 will be her fourth Ragnar. And as they say, if you had a nickel for every time Cindy incessantly talks about Ragnar… Well, you’d be rich and you probably could never own enough duct tape to keep her quiet… or something like that.

Brian CRunner #3 Brian aka “Lucky Star” was gracious enough to yield some of his bio space to Cindy. Another veteran of Digital Running’s Napa Valley Ragnar team Uncorked!, Brian ran his first two Ragnar Relays on consecutive weekends (completing the 2012 Colorado Ragnar Relay the weekend before the Napa Valley Ragnar Relay). We’re pretty sure he ran hard through the Napa Valley, but the only picture we could find was the one with the beer!

eldonRunner #4 Eldon aka “Road Star” has never considered himself a runner. His first initiation into the the world of Ragnar was in ’12 when a friend asked him if he wanted to run and grab a few beers with some other guys. Several weeks later he found himself in Pennsylvania, in a van, with a reflective vest and an “ass blinkie” (we prefer the term “butt light”, but okay…)

Motivated by the promise of beer he ran the prescribed mileage and was then diagnosed with the contagious condition which urges him to run again… and again… and again. Not one to pass up an opportunity to purchase something “as seen on TV”, he has made countless suspicious purchases which include the “Slap-Chop”, “Lint Lizard”, “Sham-Wow” and most recently his set of 4, yes FOUR, “Olde Brooklyn Lanterns”. Other purchases have been more useful and have served him well in his efforts to gain a Ragnar worthy body. These include P90X, Insanity and Insanity the Asylum Volume 2, all of which should provide him with the cardio capacity necessary for the 200-miles in a van with several other sweaty, smelly, stinking Ragnar runners – and of course the running he’ll do in between!

Eldon has recently discovered that running tights fresh out of the dryer are “just wonderful – like climbing into bed with a heat blanket”. Sadly, there are no dryers in the desert and it gets cold at night!

Runner 5) Johnny aka “Chevere Star” is from Guayaquil, Ecuador. He is 52 years old and has been living in the U.S. since 2001. Although he can understand English when he reads it, he has difficulties understanding it during conversation – challenging Coach Brian to remember his high school Spanish lessons throughout last year’s Del Sol Ragnar Relay. Fortunately, we have Maria to translate this year!

Johnny is Assistant Manager at “99 cents Only”, and he’s worked for them as long as he’s been living in the United States. In 2006, Johnny suffered a torn ligament in his left knee that keeps him from playing soccer. After a break, wanting to practice some sport, he encouraged himself to run in 2009 and competed in the half marathon in Arizona. From there he participated in two more half marathons and 12 other shorter distances. A veteran of  Digital Running’s team “Me So Thorny”, this will be his second Del Sol Ragnar relay.

Runner #6 aka “Porn Star” is our Team Captain. Brian grew up playing volleyball in the Midwest. He was talked into his first marathon in 2007, by a bourbon drinking, smoking graphic designer he met in a hotel bar in Atlanta. He is now an avid runner who e-coaches adults across the United States while coaching Jr. High and High School athletes in Cross Country and Track & Field at a private school in Florida.

In his spare time, Brian enjoys driving sketchy white vans, decorating with Christmas lights and long runs with strangers in the middle of the night. He has a Ph.D. in Oceanography with a specialty in numerical modeling and has a mean Ragnar-estimated-times spreadsheet (Email us for a copy.) This is Brian’s 2nd Ragnar Relay of 2013 and lucky #13 of his overnight relay career. He lives in St. Petersburg, FL, with his wife, two teenage daughters and their dog, Kaboodles.

Van #1 Support Staff: Team Mom Raffi aka “Rock Star” has nearly 16 years of Mommy-ing under her belt. She sorts out the details & graphic design for our events, and makes sure the water bottles are kept on ice. As the online Editor of digitalrunning.com, her years of writing, marketing & graphic design experience come in handy. Her past experience includes stints with Mercury Records, Rolling Stone magazine and the St. Petersburg Times. Raffi is kind of a health nut, and loves Yoga, dark chocolate, Disney and reading. She lives in Florida with her husband and two teenage daughters. This is her Dirty Dozen Ragnar – her 12th time not running Ragnar Relay.

Van #2

Amy M
Runner #7 Shannon aka “Death Star” likes puppies, sunshine, and bling. On a whim she decided to do a half marathon. After an enchanting journey of 13.1 miles she was crowned with a magical necklace, attached was some heavy bling – and that’s when it started. She did another race and got more bling. The bling was incredible and it spoke to Death Star and Death Star wanted more. She discovered double medal runs, trifectas, and triple crowns, oh my! One day while scoring some bling she met a girl just like her. We’ll call this girl, Sunkist. Sunkist turned to Death Star and asked, “Do you Ragnar?” Death Star had heard rumors of this magical Ragnar and didn’t know what it was, she only knew there would be bling, and she was in! After three official Ragnars plus one trail experiment, Death Star will be in AZ to claim another medal.

JadeRunner #8 Jade aka “Mega Star” migrated from Southeast Asia many moons ago, and since then she has been discovering and learning all there is to the USA! One of her discoveries a few years ago was Ragnar Relay, and now she tries to participate in at least one each year. She’s never been a super athlete, but always loved sports and dabbles in every sport she can get her hands on. She runs as a challenge to herself and also to meet new and wonderful runner friends!

Jade lives with her two cats, Mac and Tosh, and her doggy Otis in North Carolina. She loves to cook, travel, play sports and spend time with family and friends. When she is not analyzing data for her job, she’s out and about living life to the fullest!

MaiaRunner #9 Maia aka “Ninja Star” and her mother moved from New Jersey to Arizona. Ninja Star quickly discovered that a dark haired Italian with a Jersey accent didn’t fit into the blond surfer crowd of Arizona. She was finally cornered by several ruffians who belonged to the same running school. As she was passing out from the beating, she spotted Miyagi, the elderly gardener, who leaped into the fray and saved her by outfighting half a dozen teenagers. Miyagi and Ninja Star soon found out the real motivator behind the boys’ violent attitude in the form of their running coach. Miyagi promised to teach Ninja Star running and arranged a race at the all-valley track meet some months off. When her training began, Miyagi seemed more interested in having Ninja Star paint fences and wax cars than teaching her running. However, it was ultimately through these seemingly mundane and unrelated chores that Ninja Star not only learned how to run, but also earned an affection from Miyagi that lasted at least two more sequels.

DaleRunner #10 Dale aka “The Big Dipper” joins us from a magical neighborhood in New York City. He suffers from a rare skin condition that results in an elongated nose and fluffy yellow feathers all over his body, but he struts forth undaunted by his physical appearance. Known as a lady’s man, Dale lives an adrenaline fueled life of freestyle snowmobiling, base jumping and international espionage. He once had an awkward moment – just to see how it feels, and the police often question him because they find him so interesting. When Dale needs a break, he prefers to run an overnight relay. We are humbled to have him on board.

RebeccaRunner #11 Rebecca aka “Sun(kist) Star” is originally from CA and now lives in Las Vegas. She is a hairstylist, and when not making people beautiful you may find her in a van with 5 other people running around town and all through the night, surmounting obstacles in the mud, at a yoga class or practicing her latest dance moves! She is thrilled to be running her 5th Ragnar, but this is her first with the Digital Running crew. She typically wears orange whenever she gets the chance and eats peanut butter like it’s the last thing on earth.

Rebecca likes to play “van mom”and has been known to NOT let people sleep due to her outgoing personality and her amazing team spirit! She is always there to cheer everyone on and makes sure everyone else is too! Rebecca has a busy calendar planned for 2013 with 3+ half marathons, 8 or so Ragnars, a couple fun 5k runs – and who knows, maybe another mud run! She is looking forward to running with the Digital Running Club and hopes to continue running around the country with us. We’ll reserve judgment for after the finish.

RachelFrom a young age, Runner #12 Rachel aka “Super Star” always knew she would be a Super Star. She began her career in rhythmic gymnastics and quickly rose to the top tier of the sport (you should see her with a twirly ribbon, or that weird ball thing).

Since retirement from the Olympic circuit, her new hobbies include running amazingly slow for extremely long distances and meeting strangers on the internet before getting into their vans. This will be her 3rd Ragnar, and she completed her 5th marathon in Death Valley three weeks ago. In her spare time, Rachel enjoys dinosaurs, climbing rocks and spending time with her pet dingo, LuLu. If you see her running, please offer her a doughnut, or a beer… or both.
