Catching up with Healthy Ashley

healthy ashley great floridianThe Basics: 24 year old Ashley Stephens, lives in Orlando, FL, and has been blogging as Healthy Ashley for years. Today she has some news to share about a new role she has taken on…

Why do you run?
I started running because with each mile running would open up what’s possible for me. Every first (first 5k, first 20 mile run, first ultra) showed me I was stronger than I thought. Now I run more to clear my mind and for the sense of accomplishment in the middle of a regular week.

When do you prefer to run?
I prefer running in the early morning before the day gets busy, but sometimes the snooze button wins and I run early evening.

When/Where was your best run ever?
My best run ever was my first 20 mile run while training for the Disney marathon (which ended up being my second marathon after I spontaneously ran a trail marathon in the middle of my training). I was so scared of the big 2-0; but I felt weightless and enjoyed every second. I think I really became a runner that day.

What is your biggest running disaster/embarrassing moment?
Oh my gosh. During the Croom 50k trail race I thought the course went down a ditch OR around the ditch so on the second lap I decided to take the less traveled path around the ditch. As I’m running I see a man standing on the course with his pants by his ankles. He had just pooped and was about to wipe. I simply covered my eyes as I ran past him and yelled, “I’m not looking!” Best. Moment. Ever.

We hear you have a new race coming up – what are the details?
I’m so excited for the launch of the Xtreme Obstacle Challenge. This course has more than 25 seriously extreme obstacles spread over a 5k course. Many of the obstacles are large scale (think Wipe Out style) and are as much about strength as they are fun. Best of all, the race is mud-free so you can really focus on the obstacles. Our first event is June 29 in Lakeland, FL, but Michigan and Alabama are on the calendar for this year.

Who is this race meant for?
This is a race for everyone. There are competitive waves with a $2,500 purse for the hardcore racers, but the course is designed to be a fun new challenge for runners, triathletes, mud runners and those who just want to have a good time. Everyone gets a finisher’s medal, event T-shirt, free photos and a post-race party. Those enrolled in the competitive waves ($10 on top of registration) are eligible for age group awards and a piece of the $2,500 purse. And I can’t forget about the costume contest with prizes and money up for grabs!

What are your best tips for first time obstacle-course runners?
First, it’s that an obstacle course is within reach. Even if you can’t make it through an obstacle alone, there’s always someone there to help you. Second, push, pull, jump, crawl and run as much as you can. All kinds of training will pay off at the Xtreme Obstacle Challenge.

What “obstacles” were you faced with that you did not expect when first organizing a race?

What do you bring to every race?
Sommer Sports, who is hosting the Xtreme Obstacle Challenge, has been putting on great running and triathlon events for more than 30 years. As a team we know how to set up a solid event and provide a great racing experience. That said, we bring the FUN!
