Tracy: Round three – “First”

Do you remember your first pair of running shoes? Mine are still in my closet. Don’t ask me why I never threw them away… they’re old, worn out, heavy, muddy, and I’ll never wear them again (thank goodness, they’re UG-LY!). But there they are. I got it in my head to start running when I found out that my daughter’s camp holds an annual 4 mile road race to raise money for camperships. The camp is for girls with Type 1 Diabetes (like my daughter) and I figured, heck, I’m in good shape and it’s for my daughter… I’ll do it! With minimal training I got through the race okay, in an old pair of no-name sneaks that I didn’t even have to tie/untie anymore. You know, the kind you just skip your feet in and out … Read entire article »

Jenny: Round three – “First”

Why is it that your firsts are always awkward? You’re first day of school, your first dance, your first drink, your first… Anyway, firsts are not only awkward, they are typically a fantastic learning experience. And no more so than with running. My first run, my first race, my first half-marathon – all were critical learning experiences on my running journey. Let’s take a look at the good and the bad things I’ve learned from these three firsts. My First Run My entire life I’ve been athletic. I was born dribbling a basketball. I’ve played every sport under the sun, been decent at some, and truly awful at others, but from the time I could crawl until I graduated high school my life was dominated by sports. Enter college. Nothing will destroy an athletic … Read entire article »

Rebecca: Round three – “First”

The last time I resumed running; I knew I’d never quit again. The fact that I even resumed running after a year and a half hiatus is applause-worthy enough because the worst thing for me about resuming running was that I always remembered the end of my last bout with running instead of the beginning. Instead of remembering and commiserating at how difficult it was to start running again, I instead compared my current progress with my then advanced level of fitness. It’s humbling starting from scratch when you have a vivid memory of what you were able to do! Having grown up and acquired life experience, I refused to go balls to the wall and be burnt out in less than 2 weeks. Yet, I struggled with accepting the reality that … Read entire article »

Rebecca: Round 2 – Temperature

Rebecca: Round 2 – Temperature

Had you told me that come July, I’d be wishing it were January again, I would have laughed. Seriously, as anyone who lives in Michigan knows, the winters are long. I mean loooonnnggggg. I couldn’t have anticipated the near 100-degree weather we’d be having in July though. Let’s talk about the winters. The cold, in my opinion, is much easier to deal with than the heat, but the downside is the snow and ice. I know, there are … Read entire article »
